Deadlines

When does your university's Citavi licence end?

More and more universities are not renewing their Citavi campus licence. Here we collect the end dates we know of, with a link to the library's announcement and the day we last read that page.

What the end of the licence means

After the end you can no longer use Citavi through your university. What happens to existing projects is handled differently by each institution. Where the licence has already ended it gets concrete: Ruhr University Bochum writes that projects can no longer be opened or edited without a valid licence; TU Darmstadt says a local backup copy of the project is necessary. Students there should act now. For everyone else: back up and export before the deadline, not after.

What to do before the end

  1. Export your project. Export your project from Citavi as Citavi XML and keep a backup copy of the project folder as well. Without a licence you may not get at the data later.
  2. Install Zotero and import. Zotero is free and imports Citavi XML via File → Import…. That moves your library.
  3. Move your Word documents. The citations in your Word files are still tied to Citavi. CiteMove turns them into Zotero citations, footnotes and bibliography included. The check is free. To the guide
